Sonja Margaret Sampson Cowan, 93, of Sycamore, Illinois, died Sunday, November 18, 2007, at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center in DeKalb. Born January 26, 1914, in Lily Lake, she was the daughter of Erick and Anna (Peterson) Erickson. She was married to Milford Sampson and then later to James Cowan on September 9, 1978, in West Chicago. She was a graduate of St. Charles High School Class of 1931. She worked at The Little Traveler in Geneva for twenty-three years, and was a founding committee member of Swedish Days in Geneva.
She is survived by her loving family of her daughter, Sharilyn Hennessy of Sycamore; two step-daughters Francine (Terry) Henigan of California, Stacy (Gary) Knutson of Sycamore; two sisters, Elsie Cook of Wisconsin, Florence Loomis of Barrington; a brother, Roy Erickson of Schulenberg, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Pat Sampson of Columbus, Indiana; twelve grandchildren, Tim, Peter, and Erica Sampson, Mike Hennessy, Michelle Pollard, Patrick and Brian Hennessy, Erin Hildreth, Mike and Mark Hennigan, Christopher and Chad Knutson; twenty-five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a daughter, Marilyn Sampson; a son, Wayne Sampson; a brother, Thurston Erickson; and a sister, Mae Peterson.
She was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church in Sycamore. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 24th at Salem Lutheran Church, 1145 DeKalb Avenue, with Pastor Janet Hunt officiating. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at Quiram-Sycamore Funeral Home. Interment will be in Lily Lake Cemetery.
