Miriam Varty Erlenborn, 93, of Sycamore, Illinois, died Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at Kindred Hospital in Sycamore. Born August 12, 1914, in Sycamore, she was the daughter of Earl W. and Lotta (Morris) Varty. Miriam was a graduate of Sycamore High School Class of 1932 and a graduate of the University of Illinois. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and was a member of the Sycamore/DeKalb Panhellenic since 1943.
On July 5, 1941, she married the love of her life, John F. Erlenborn at the Episcopal Cathedral in St. Louis, Missouri. They lived for a time in Texas and in Louisiana during WWII, but they always felt that Sycamore was their home.
She was a life-long member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Sycamore and served as a Sunday schoolteacher and an active member of the ECW. She was a long-time member of the Sycamore Hospital Board, serving as chairman for several years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for sixty-two years.
She is survived by her daughter, Jean Erlenborn of Sycamore; two nieces-in-law, Julie Murray (Ron Scheele) of Houston, Texas, Catherine (Robert) Kronschnabel of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; many great-nieces-in-law and great-nephews-in-law; many wonderful friends; and her special dog friend, Cocoa. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2006; and her brother, Robert Varty who was killed in action during WWII.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 1st at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 206 Somonauk Street, with Father Dave Hedges officiating. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Quiram-Sycamore Funeral Home. A memorial fund is established in care of Quiram-Sycamore Funeral Home, 1245 Somonauk St., Sycamore, IL 60178.
