Donald Duane Firkins, 80, of Mahomet passed away on Friday, December 7, 2007 at the Farmer City Nursing Home, Farmer City, IL following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He was born July 30, 1927 in Waterman, IL to John H. and Jennie (Benson) Firkins. He married Carolyn J. Jordal in Kirkland, IL on September 1, 1956.

Mr. Firkins graduated from Sycamore High School in 1944. He was employed at Anaconda in Sycamore, IL and then Tuttle Electric in Kirkland, IL. He attended Northern Illinois State Teachers College, DeKalb, IL before entering the U.S. Army in 1953. He returned to Northern after his discharge in 1955 and graduated in January, 1957. He started working for DeKalb-Ogle Telephone Company and retired from Contel Telephone Co. in January 1988 Division President after a 31 year telephone career.

He was a life member of the Masonic Lodge in Wyoming, IL and former Rotary and American Legion member for many years. He was also a member of the Mahomet United Methodist Church in Mahomet, IL.

He enjoyed gardening, reading, and especially his grandchildren.

Mr. Firkins is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and three sons, Lawrence (Ann) and their children Andrew and Sarah of Mahomet, IL, Richard of Urbana, IL, and Ronald (Carol) and sons Jacob, Joel, and Will of St. Joseph, IL; one sister, Marilyn (Richard) Clark of Batavia, IL and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Philip.

Services will be held at Quiram-Sycamore Funeral Home, 1245 Somonauk St., Sycamore, IL. Visitation will be at 11 am on Monday, December 10th with the funeral at 1 pm.

Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Sycamore. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the donor’s choice in care of Quiram-Sycamore Funeral Home, 1245 Somonauk St., Sycamore, IL 60178.
