Roger Hein, 89 of Kirkland, Illinois died Friday, May 23, 2008 at his home. He was born March 5, 1919 in Westerville, Nebraska, the son of Henry and Lena (Ellersick) Hein. He attended a rural grade school and graduated from high school in Sargent, Nebraska, receiving a football scholarship to college. In 1939, he moved to Kirkland to farm with his parents and later relocated to the DeKalb area. He returned to the Kirkland vicinity when the family farm was purchased in 1952 and is still the family residence.
On June 19, 1943 he married Eleanor Johnson at the Malta Methodist Church. This year they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Roger was very active in the Kirkland community. He was Treasurer of the Hiawatha School Board and then served as President for six years. He later served as County School Board Trustee for 19 years. He was an active Lions Club member. He was also a member of the Kirkland Methodist Church and served on the church board for many years. He was one of the original members who helped to develop the Kirkland Medical Clinic and later served on the board for several years. Roger enjoyed his work farming and raising cattle on the family farm. He also enjoyed building and remodeling projects. The "west" was always part of Roger’s family life. He made many trips out to purchase cattle and visit the cattle ranch in Montana where family vacations were spent. After retirement, he became a talented wood worker. Many pieces of furniture were custom made and were enjoyed and cherished by his family and friends. Roger and Eleanor spent many winters in Florida and enjoyed traveling in Canada, Alaska, Mexico, and Europe. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Hein of Kirkland; one daughter, Linda of Aberdeen, Washington; three sons, Richard (Jane) of Des Moines, Iowa, Larry of Kirkland, Kent (Char) of Spokane, Washington; three grandchildren, Greg Hein, Kelly Marckres, and David Hein; two great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Greg; brother, Charles of Loveland, Colorado; sister-in-law, Lucille Peterson, of Edmond, Oklahoma; several nieces and nephews; other family and friends.
The Funeral Service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at Kirkland United Methodist Church, 201 S. Fourth Street, Kirkland, with Pastor Michael Morrell officiating. Interment will be at Maple Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at Quiram-Kirkland Funeral Home.
