Eric Alexander Johnson, Jr., 89, of Genoa, Illinois, and formerly of Crawfordsville, Indiana, died Monday, February 18, 2008, at the DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center in DeKalb, Illinois. Born May 29, 1918, in Chicago, he was the son of Eric A. and Herrina (Fiet) Johnson. He graduated from Purdue University in 1940 with a BS in mechanical engineering. He married Augusta Hite on March 21, 1942, in Sacramento, California.

He is survived by his wife, Augusta Johnson of Genoa; a daughter, Leslie Johnson of Genoa; two sons, Eric A. (Debra) Johnson, III of Charlotte, North Carolina, Stephen (Barbara) Johnson of Genoa; four grandchildren, Christian (Tamara) Johnson, Pastor Matthew (Emily) Johnson, Birney (Angela) Johnson, Stephen (Ryan) Johnson; six great-grandchildren, Christian and Amanda Johnson, Tristan and Ethan Johnson, Liberty Johnson, Madisyn Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Crawfordsville for over fifty years. He served on the building committee for the education building and for the sanctuary. He sang in the choir for fifteen years and was a former trustee. He was a director for the Montgomery Saving Association from 1978 to 1995. He was a member and past president of Crawfordsville Kiwanis Club and was a member of the Purdue Alumni Club, John Purdue Club, and Reamer Club. He also was a member of the Crawfordsville jury selection committee and was a board member of the Crawfordsville Community Foundation. He was a member of Crawfordsville Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, and the Murat Shrine Temple. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in WWII. He enlisted in the Aviation Cadet Engineering School in 1941 and was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1943. He was discharged on January 23, 1946 and had been the supervisor of flight-line maintenance at Douglas Air Force Base. He began a successful career in sales of packaging equipment for various companies and was the president and vice president for several of them. He was a very focused and disciplined person. He felt it was his mission to serve God, his family, and his country.

A private visitation and prayer service will be held on Wednesday, February 20th in Quiram-Sycamore Funeral Home with The Reverend Paul Meyer officiating. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 23rd in First United Methodist Church, Wabash and Water Streets, in Crawfordsville with The Reverend Dr. George Plasterer and Pastor Matthew W. H. Johnson officiating. A memorial fund is established for the Shriner's Children's Hospital in care of Quiram Funeral Directors, 1245 Somonauk St., Sycamore, IL 60178.
