Irene Nehring Meier, 92, died peacefully at her home in DeKalb, Illinois, on May 23, 2008, in the loving care of her family. Born August 5, 1915, in Sycamore, the daughter of Paul A. and Elizabeth (Riebock) Nehring. She graduated from Northwestern University with a BA in Music Education. Irene married Henry M. Meier on January 21, 1944, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sycamore. She was an active member of the church serving as an organist and choir director at St. John’s starting in her twenties and continued for many years until her health declined in her eighties. She has followed her parents; husband; and beloved grandson, John D. Meier, and she will be there to welcome us when we, too, are called to Heaven. Her children grew up in a music-filled home and include Robert Meier, Elizabeth Carney, Paul N. (Jean) Meier, Sarah (Steve) Douglas, John C. (Diane), Martha Meier, and friend, Lisa Lovelace, Rita (Ronald) Massier. She has nineteen grandchildren, Christine Meier, Julio (Stephanie) Brown, Carmen (Beth) Brown, Amy (Nolan) Russell, Scott Meier (Bridget), Paul N. (Jennifer) Meier II, Benjamin Meier, Peter Meier, Emily Douglas, Michael Douglas, Jennifer (Adam) Lowry, Katie Meier, Alyssa (Kyle) Colness, and Andrew Meier. She has twenty-two great-grandchildren, including Marlie Irene Colness who was born May 22, 2008. She also has special nieces, nephews, and cousins, and a steadfast friend, Mary Jane Lindaas.

Irene and her husband daily demonstrated the faith that they shared by living lives of the highest honesty and integrity, and by treating all persons as children of God, each one worthy of respect and not to be judged by their social, economic, educational, or life circumstances. We can only pray that we can live up to the legacy of their faith and lives.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27th at The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. John, 26555 Brickville Rd., Sycamore, with The Reverend Robert Weinhold officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. A memorial fund has been established for St. John’s Lutheran Church choir and music programs and DeKalb County Hospice in care of Quiram-Sycamore Funeral Home, 1245 Somonauk St., Sycamore, IL 60178.
