Orrin Merritt, Jr., 84, of Genoa, Illinois, died Thursday, November 29, 2007, at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. Born January 21, 1923 in Sycamore to Orrin Merritt, Sr. and Grace E. (Arnold) Merritt. He married Dorothy Peterson on January 8, 1943 in Genoa.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy Merritt; three sons, Orrin III (Dodie) of Genoa, Thomas of Burr Ridge, Todd (Brenda) of Genoa; one daughter, Julie (Bill) Murphy of
Wilmette; eleven grandchildren; and one great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, LeRoy; and grandson, Timothy.
He served three years in the U.S. army during WW II. When he returned home he operated the Genoa Dairy for 15 years and then worked for Automatic Electric for 16 years as a payroll supervisor and was later in charge of their computer systems. Finally retiring from DeKalb Ag in 1985 as payroll manager.
He was a scout leader for eight years, served on the Genoa-Kingston Fire Department for 27 years. Was past commander of the Genoa VFW, past president of the Data Processing Association, and the last surviving charter member of the Genoa Lions Club. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church where he served on many committees. He served many years on the board of trustees for the Kishwaukee Heritage Museum, and was a life member of the Genoa American Legion.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 2nd at Faith United Methodist Church 325 S. Stott, Genoa with the Reverend Daniel F. Diss officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at the church prior to the funeral service. In Lieu of flowers a memorial fund is established in care of Cooper-Quiram Funeral Home. , P. O.
