Shirley Carlyn Nelson, 82, of Rochelle, and formerly of Kingston and Monroe Center, Illinois, died Monday, December 10, 2007, at her daughter’s home in Freeport. Born January 10, 1925, in Ashton, she was the daughter of Oliver and Mary (Govig) Finnestad

She was a graduate of Creston High School Class of 1941. She married Norman John Nelson on May 14, 1944, at the First Lutheran Church in DeKalb. She and her husband farmed in the Lily Lake, Kingston, and Monroe Center areas. She also worked at General Telephone & Electronics in Genoa from 1960 to 1983.

She is survived by her daughter, Toni (Tim) Rouse of Freeport; her son, Terry L. Nelson of Seligman, Arizona; two sisters, Lois Allen, Leota (Ron) Hansen all of Rochelle; two sisters-in-law, Lyola and Virginia Finnestad; four grandchildren, Jeffrey and Michael Glass, David Nelson, Julie Nelson Haskell; ten great-grandchildren, Katie, Abigail, and Hannah Glass, Spencer and Tucker Glass, Quinton Nelson, Darie, Weston, Montea, and Gage Haskell; many nieces and nephews; and many beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and six brothers, Burdette, Kenneth, Harland, Oliver, Verlis, and Robert Finnestad.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Kirkland, the DeKalb County Farm Bureau, and Kishwaukee Wood Carvers Association. She loved square dancing and was a member of Sycamore Whirlaways.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 15th, at First Lutheran Church in Kirkland, 510 West South Street, with Pastor Carl L. M. Rasmussen officiating. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at Quiram-Kirkland Funeral Home. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery near Creston.
