Ray G. Sellner, 90, of Sycamore died July 7, 2008 at Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb. He was born October 8, 1917 in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota the son of Joseph and Catherine Sellner. He married Mercedes "Marcy" Hoecherl on October 7, 1946 at St. Raphaels Catholic Church in Springfield, Minnesota. He was employed by General Electric in DeKalb for over thirty-one years, retiring on December 10, 1982. Ray served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, as a radio teletype operator.
He took his basic training at Sheppard Field, Texas. From there he was stationed at Davis Monthan Field, with Tucson, Arizona, with the 402nd Bomb Squadron, 39th Bomb Group for eight months. For a short time he was stationed at Salina and Great Bend, Kansas, where they picked up their B-29 Bombers and headed for the South Pacific. He served in the China-Burma, India theatre for several months, with the Western Air Combat, and air offensive against Japan. He served on Guam, Saipan, for a short time, and then moved on to Okinawa, where he remained until returning back to the United States. He served about eighteen months overseas, at that time he received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Service Medal, five Bronze Stars, along with three Overseas Bars.
He was a member of The Church of St. Mary in Sycamore, BPO Elks Lodge # 1392, Sycamore Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5768, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1506, American Legion in Genoa Post 0337, and DeKalb County Farm Bureau Prime Timers.
He loved playing the organ and entertaining people, which he did at all our local clubs, prime-timers, funerals, and weddings. Ray did all his organ playing by ear.
He is survived by his wife Marcy Sellner of Sycamore; sister-in-law, Virginia Sellner of Mankato, Minnesota; brother-in-law, Ervin (Joan) Hoecherl of Sycamore; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and four sisters.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 10, 2008 at The Church of St. Mary, 244 Waterman St., Sycamore with The Reverend Frank John Timar, MSC celebrating. Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Sycamore. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Quiram-Sycamore Funeral Home, with a wake service at 5 p.m. A memorial fund has been established in care of Quiram-Sycamore Funeral Home, 1245 Somonauk St., Sycamore, IL 60178.
