Ruby Birdalee Hurt Stovall, 96, of Sycamore, Illinois and formerly of Arkansas, Nebraska, and Colorado, died Wednesday, January 2, 2008, in DeKalb, Illinois at DeKalb Co. Rehab & Nursing Center. Born April 27, 1911, in Lake City, Arkansas, she was the daughter of Edward E. and Lena Mae (Stephenson) Hurt. She married Myrl A. Stovall on November 6, 1931, in Arbyrd, Missouri.
To this union were born three children; Joy (Robert) Stovall Bottger, Jerry Don Stovall, and Danny (Patricia) Stovall. Ruby is also survived by eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Jerry; and all of her siblings.
Reared in the hills of Arkansas, and after the death of her parents, she raised her youngest sister, Quandalia. During the concluding months of WWII, the family moved to Hastings Naval Ammunitions Depot. Myrl transferred to the Department of the Army in 1950, and the family moved to Ordville, Nebraska. Ruby became employed as a cook at the Sioux Army Depot Elementary School. When the depot closed, Myrl was transferred to Savannah, Illinois, where they retired and returned to Sidney, Nebraska. Life there was pleasant, but with no family near they moved to Castle Rock, Colorado, to be close to their mountain cabin. The cabin was used for fishing and hosting memorable family gatherings, especially for the grandchildren they adored. She was active in the community and the Castle Rock First United Methodist Church.
Myrl’s passing in 1994 left her alone to care for their son, Jerry at her home in Castle Rock. In the fall of 1999, health issues brought her son, Dan and her daughter, Joy Bottger, to Castle Rock on alternating schedules. Soon her health required moving her to Sycamore to be under the watchful eyes of her son, Dan and daughter-in-law, Pat. Ruby returned to her religious roots when she joined Sycamore Baptist Church, November 2000. Two broken hips in 2005 placed her in the wonderful, impeccable care of the nurses and staff at the DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center until her death. Her grandson, Jim Stovall was by her side at the time of her death. The family is very appreciative and thankful to her friends in the Little Peddler Gift Shop and to all at County Home. There is no visitation or funeral service in Illinois. Burial will be in Castle Rock on June 21, 2008.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is established for the benefit of the DeKalb County Nursing Home Auxiliary in care of Quiram-Sycamore Funeral Home, 1245 Somonauk St., Sycamore, IL 60178. Information: 815 895-6589 or visit www.quiram.com.
