Jean W. Burtness, 84, of Sycamore, Illinois, and formerly of Chicago, died Saturday, December 29, 2007, at her home. Born May 30, 1923, in Chicago, she was the daughter of Harry C. and Hazel M. (Baldrey) Bordwell. In 1945 she married Paul S. Burtness in Chicago.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Burtness of Sycamore; a daughter, Karen Burtness Prak and her husband, Jan Willem Prak of Menlo Park, California; a son Neil J. Burtness of Sycamore; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Barbara Buddemeier, and Dorothy Albright.
She was a graduate of Northwestern University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree. She was a former english teacher at Crystal Lake High School. During the early years of her marriage she was a service representative for Illinois Bell Telephone to help augment family finances so her husband could finish his graduate studies. She enjoyed reading, birding, and was an enthusiastic bridge player. She loved classical music and was a loyal subscriber to the Chicago Symphony concerts.
